Brother Maynard!

Bring forth the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch! (by Profound Whatever)

I was trying to come up with some serious-sounding discussion to go with this, like putting something about the significance of relics, or of the Grail legend, or of religious orders in the middle ages. Really, though, I'm just a Monty Python fan and couldn't pass this up.

  1. what a wonderful blog!

    you could've added this:
'Contrary to modern myth, belief in a spherical rather than a flat earth was common in the Middle Ages, and predominant among the educated.'

  2. Hi Pennycake,

Glad you're enjoying the blog. You're right, that's certainly something I cover in detail when I teach about the history of science, but I hadn't made the connection with the orb pictured. Thanks for helping me learn a little more. I'll definitely include that next time I cover the topic.
